#6. English Grammar Web: The Clause and Phrase

Lesson No.3

The Clause and the Phrase and its structure

1. What is a Clause in English:

A clause is a grammatical unit that typically consists of a subject and a predicate. There are two types of clauses: independent and dependent. An independent clause can stand alone as a complete sentence, while a dependent clause cannot.

Examples of independent clauses:

  • The dog barked loudly.
  • I walked to the store.

Examples of dependent clauses:

  • Because the dog barked loudly
  • When I walked to the store

2. What is a Phrase in English:

A phrase is a group of words that functions as a single unit in a sentence and does not contain both a subject and a predicate. Phrases can be used to modify or add information to the subject or verb of a sentence.

Examples of phrases:

  • The big, red balloon (noun phrase modifying "balloon")
  • Running through the park (verb phrase modifying "I")
  • With great enthusiasm (prepositional phrase modifying "performed")
  • The book on the table (prepositional phrase modifying "book")
  • In the morning (adverbial phrase modifying the verb in the sentence)
