   Lesson No.18

The Position of Adjectives with Examples

Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns. The position of adjectives in a sentence depends on the number of adjectives used and the type of adjective being used. There are three main positions for adjectives in English:

  1. Pre-noun position:

When only one adjective is used to describe a noun, it is usually placed before the noun. Example: "A beautiful flower."
  1. Post-determiner position:

When there are multiple adjectives used to describe a noun, they are usually placed in a specific order. The first adjective is placed after the determiner (e.g. the, a, an) and before other adjectives. Example: "The big red car."
  1. Post-verb position:

Some adjectives, such as participle adjectives (e.g. "broken," "interested"), are placed after the verb in a sentence. Example: "The vase is broken."

It's important to note that the position of adjectives can affect the meaning of a sentence, so it's important to place adjectives correctly to convey the intended meaning.

The Position of Adjectives in a Diagram

A simple diagram that shows the three positions of adjectives in English sentences:

Noun + Adjective(s)

  1. Pre-noun position: Adjective + Noun

E.g. A happy dog

  1. Post-determiner position: Determiner + Adjective(s) + Noun

E.g. The big brown dog

  1. Post-verb position: Subject + Verb + Adjective

E.g. The dog is happy

Note that the order of adjectives can also be affected by the type of adjective being used. For example, there is a specific order for opinion adjectives (e.g. beautiful), size adjectives (e.g. big), and shape adjectives (e.g. round). The exact order can vary depending on the specific adjectives being used, so it's important to be familiar with commonly used adjective orders to ensure that you are using them correctly.

The Position of Adjectives in A Paragraph

In a paragraph, adjectives can be placed in any of the three positions mentioned earlier: pre-noun, post-determiner, and post-verb. The exact position of adjectives in a paragraph depends on the intended meaning and the number of adjectives used to describe a noun.

For example:

"The beautiful sunset over the ocean was breathtaking. The brilliant orange and pink colors slowly faded into the dark blue sky. The peaceful sound of the waves crashing on the shore was music to my ears."

In this paragraph, adjectives are used in all three positions: "beautiful" is in pre-noun position, "brilliant" and "orange" are in post-determiner position, and "peaceful" is in post-verb position.

It's important to use adjectives effectively in a paragraph to add description and make the writing more interesting. However, it's also important not to overuse adjectives, as this can make writing feel cluttered and distracting.
